Feeding The House1 Thessalonians 5:17

Pray Without Ceasing, In A Loud House

This message is for having read that instruction as an impossible standard, quietly stopped trying to meet it, and carried a low sense of disqualification ever since

She gave it a proper attempt when she was twenty-four and the attempt lasted about a day and a half.

She had understood the instruction to mean a continuous interior murmur. A running conversation with God that never stops, underneath everything else, all day, and she has since met two people who describe something like that and she believed them both.

So she tried it. And what happened was that she spent a day and a half noticing that she had stopped, over and over, dozens of times, and each noticing was a small failure, and by the evening of the second day she was more distant from God than she had been on the Monday.

She is forty-one now. There are three people in her house and one of them is nineteen and plays music, and the youngest talks continuously from about half past six in the morning, and she works in a room with four other people in it.

She has not attempted it again. And what she has instead is a low, permanent, unexamined sense that there is a basic Christian activity she cannot do, and that everybody else is doing it, and that this probably explains several things.

If you gave up on those three words a long time ago, come and sit down. Nothing here is a standard.

Pray Without Ceasing, In A Loud House

The word does not mean uninterrupted

Here is the instruction, and everything turns on what the second word actually meant to the people who first read it.

Pray without ceasing.1 Thessalonians 5:17

The word behind without ceasing is used elsewhere in the same period for a cough. A persistent cough. Not a continuous one, because a continuous cough is not a thing anybody has ever had, but one that keeps coming back, all day, from a condition that does not go away.

That is the picture. Not an unbroken sound. A recurring one, arising from something that is permanently there.

And that changes the instruction completely. It is not asking for a murmur she must sustain by attention, which no human being with a job and three people in the house has ever managed. It is describing a life in which prayer keeps happening, at intervals, because the underlying condition is a person who belongs to God.

Which means the dozens of times she noticed she had stopped were not dozens of failures. Every single one of them was the cough. The noticing was the prayer returning, and she counted each return as a lapse.

You have been doing it for seventeen years, and it was already happening every time you noticed you had stopped. 1 Thessalonians 5:17 is where that sits, in a word used for something recurring rather than something unbroken, and the same Spirit who moved Paul to choose it is the one who ends a seventeen-year disqualification in a woman of forty-one.

Look at where it sits in the list

There is a second piece of evidence and it is in the layout of the passage.

That verse is one of a short run of very brief instructions. Rejoice evermore, and then this one, and then in every thing give thanks. Three lines, all short, all pitched at the same level.

Nobody reads rejoice evermore as a demand for continuous unbroken cheerfulness, because that is plainly impossible and everybody senses it. Nobody reads in every thing give thanks as requiring a separate act of gratitude for every event of the day.

But the middle one gets read as an absolute, and it gets read that way by exactly the kind of person who is conscientious enough to attempt it, which is why it damages the people it damages.

They are three descriptions of a life with a certain grain to it. None of them is a standard, and the one in the middle is not the exception.

You are already living with the grain the passage describes, and it was already the shape of your week. He promised it, in the same three verses where all of it is named as the will of God for people in Christ rather than as a set of tasks (1 Thessalonians 5:18), and His Spirit does not issue an instruction nobody has ever been able to carry out.

The paragraph that outranks the teaching

Before we go on, this outranks everything above it.

Some people must not go without food. If you live with diabetes, if you are pregnant or nursing, if you take medication, if you have ever had a hard relationship with food or with eating, if you are underweight, unwell, frail or elderly, or if you are simply not sure, speak to your doctor before you go without anything and let their answer be the answer. There is no length on this page, no kind of fast, no plan and no schedule, and there is not going to be one here.

And nothing in this article asks anything of the people in that house. Nobody has to be quieter, nothing has to be arranged around you, and nothing here should cost your nineteen year old his music. A practice that requires a household to change is the wrong practice.

Privacy is about audience and never about hiding, too. Telling your doctor is right. Telling your husband is right. Telling whoever cooks in your house is right and it is basic courtesy. None of it fails anything.

You are fully inside this, and you were never at its edge because of how loud your house is. Scripture settled that where God receives according to what a person actually has (2 Corinthians 8:12), and the Spirit of God is not distributed by anybody's available quiet.

If today is heavier than a page can hold, call somebody real: your doctor, a counselor, or a crisis line, and the emergency services if you or anybody near you is in danger tonight.

The breakthrough

So here is the turn, and it costs your body nothing.

You are already praying without ceasing, and it is already true, and the word never once meant uninterrupted. Scripture settled that in a term used for a recurring cough rather than a continuous sound (1 Thessalonians 5:17), and the Holy Spirit is not the author of a seventeen-year sense that you cannot do a basic thing.

And the two people who described something continuous to you were not lying. Some people do experience something like that, and it is real, and it is also not what the verse requires and it is not the entry price for anything.

What comes off tonight is a sentence about yourself that you have never examined, which arrived on the second evening of an attempt made by a twenty-four year old who had been told the wrong thing about a Greek word.

Declare this over yourself

Say these out loud, in your own voice, wherever you are standing. The standing to speak like this is yours in Christ and it is not issued according to how continuous anybody's praying is. Scripture is the ground under it and the Holy Spirit is what makes it living rather than merely willing, and what God does in a loud house, and when, is His, however He answers.

  1. Standard I could never meet, you are misread and you are not the verse. The word means recurring rather than unbroken, and it was used in that century for a cough that keeps coming back. In the name of Jesus I stop counting returns as lapses.
  2. Sense that there is a basic thing I cannot do, you are false and you are not God's word about me. One failed attempt at twenty-four handed me a sentence I have repeated for seventeen years, and His Spirit is settling that in me tonight.
  3. Father, I gave up on three words a long time ago and never once looked at them again. I thank You that the underlying condition is a person who belongs to You, and that the coming back is the whole of what was asked. Here are four short sentences today, and I am not minding the gaps.

Why we ask you to say these out loud

The word this stands on
