Fasting TogetherPsalm 133:1

I Still Feel Like A Guest In Here

This message is for having joined the group and still, months later, feeling like a visitor being kindly hosted rather than somebody who is actually part of it

Seven months, and he still takes his cup through to the kitchen at the end.

Nobody else does. Everybody else leaves them, because somebody does them in a batch afterward and that is simply how that house works. He knows this. He has been told, kindly, twice.

He still takes his through, because he is a guest, and that is what a guest does.

And that is the whole of it, really, in one small habit: seven months of being made entirely welcome in a room and still standing slightly inside the doorway of it.

He is not being left out. He is invited to everything, including the things that are not organized. Somebody remembered his daughter's exams. Somebody sends him the thing about the football. If you asked anybody in that group whether he belongs they would look at you strangely.

But there is a feeling, and it has not shifted since October, and the feeling is that he is being hosted. Very well hosted. By people who are at home in a place where he is a visitor.

He is forty-eight and he has felt this in every group he has ever been in, including one he ran.

If you have been a guest somewhere for months, come and sit down. Nobody is going to host you here.

I Still Feel Like A Guest In Here

The verb is dwelling, and it is a verb about duration

Here is the psalm everybody quotes about unity, and the word that matters is not the one people usually land on.

Behold, how good and how pleasant it is for brethren to dwell together in unity!Psalm 133:1

Dwell together.

Not gather together. Not meet, not assemble, not be admitted. Dwell, which is a word about living somewhere, and living somewhere is not an event. It is a duration.

Nobody dwells anywhere on their first night. You can be given a key, shown the rooms, made completely welcome, and you still will not be dwelling for quite a while, because dwelling is what happens to a person over time in a place and cannot be conferred by anybody's hospitality however generous.

Which means the feeling he has had since October is not a diagnosis. It is a description of a stage.

And notice the psalm is short. Three verses, and the two after this one are both about something running down and spreading out slowly, oil down a beard and dew coming down a mountain. The whole poem is about a slow descent of something onto a place, and there is nothing instant anywhere in it.

You are somewhere in a process rather than outside a door, and it was already a duration and not an admission. Psalm 133:1 is where that sits, in a verb about living somewhere rather than arriving anywhere, and the same Spirit who moved the psalmist to build the whole picture out of slow descent is the one who takes the word visitor off a man of forty-eight.

Why hospitality cannot fix it, and why that is not their fault

Now the thing that has been quietly frustrating for seven months, and it is worth naming because he has probably concluded it means something is wrong with him.

Those people cannot make him at home. They have tried, with real warmth, and it has not worked, and it was never going to.

Hospitality is a thing done for a guest. It is by definition an asymmetry: one party is at home and the other is being received, and every act of welcome, however kind, restates the arrangement. The more graciously he is hosted, the more thoroughly he is a guest.

Which is why the cup matters. The cup is the one place in that house where he could stop being hosted, and he takes it through every week, and taking it through is the single most guest-like act available to him.

What ends the asymmetry is not more welcome. It is him doing something in that house that nobody thanked him for.

You have the one thing that changes it already in your hands, and it was never anybody else's to give you. He promised it, in the description of a household of God where the newcomers are called fellow citizens rather than guests (Ephesians 2:19), and His Spirit does not leave a man on the visitor side of a room forever.

The paragraph that outranks the teaching

Before we go on, this outranks everything above it.

Some people must not go without food. If you live with diabetes, if you are pregnant or nursing, if you take medication, if you have ever had a hard relationship with food or with eating, if you are underweight, unwell, frail or elderly, or if you are simply not sure, speak to your doctor before you go without anything and let their answer be the answer. There is no length on this page, no kind of fast, no plan and no schedule, and there is not going to be one here.

And nothing here makes a group the superior kind of anything. If you are in no group at all, everything in this article is still yours, and there is no version of this site where the person inside a room is further along than the person outside one.

Privacy is about audience and never about hiding, too. Telling your doctor is right. Telling your wife is right. Telling whoever cooks in your house is right and it is basic courtesy. None of it fails anything.

You are not one step behind anybody in that room, and you never were. Scripture settled that where God is named as no respecter of persons (Romans 2:11), and the Spirit of God is not distributed by how at home anybody feels.

If today is heavier than a page can hold, call somebody real: your doctor, a counselor, or a crisis line, and the emergency services if you or anybody near you is in danger tonight.

The breakthrough

So here is the turn, and it does not require your body to do anything.

You are already one of them, and it is already the arrangement, and the feeling was never a report on your standing. Scripture settled that in a verb about dwelling rather than about being admitted (Psalm 133:1), and the Holy Spirit is not the source of the sense that you are being hosted.

And forty-eight years of this in every group, including one you ran, is worth noticing rather than despairing about. It is not a defect in those groups and it is not proof of something wrong in you. It is what happens to somebody who has always been extremely careful not to presume, and being careful not to presume is a decent instinct that has quietly cost you every room you have ever been in.

Declare this over yourself

Say these out loud, in your own voice, wherever you are standing. The standing to speak like this is yours in Christ and it is not issued by anybody's hospitality. Scripture is the ground under it and the Holy Spirit is what makes it living rather than merely willing, and what God does in that room, and when, is His, however He answers.

  1. Feeling of being a guest in here, you are old and you are not the truth. The psalm says dwell together, and dwelling is a duration rather than an admission, and nobody dwells anywhere on the first night. In the name of Jesus I stop standing inside the doorway.
  2. Instinct never to presume, you are named and you are not humility. Being carefully unpresuming is a decent habit that has cost me every room I have been in, and His Spirit is settling that in me tonight.
  3. Father, seven months and I still take my cup through to the kitchen at the end. I thank You that You made me a fellow citizen rather than a visitor and did it without asking me how at home I felt. Here is Thursday, and I am not waiting to be asked.

Why we ask you to say these out loud

The word this stands on
