The Chosen FastHebrews 13:16

That Does Not Count As Worship

This message is for having separated worship from the ordinary favor she does for people, and not believing the second one counts as anything with God at all

She could draw you the line. She has never said it out loud but she could draw it, and she knows exactly where it runs.

On one side: Sunday. Her devotional time, when she manages it. The hymn in the car, the one that gets her. Communion. That is worship. That side of the line is God's.

On the other side: the entire rest of her life. Which includes, this week alone, driving her neighbor's daughter to the clinic twice because the buses do not run right. Making an extra portion for the man across the way whose wife is in the hospital. Sitting on the phone for fifty minutes with a woman from church who has said the same four things since March. Doing the paperwork for her cousin who cannot read forms.

That side is just being decent. That is what a person does. It is not nothing, but it is not worship, and she has never once thought of any of it as anything to do with God.

And the effect of that line, which is the reason she is reading this, is that her spiritual life is about ninety minutes long and the rest of the week is empty. She feels that. She has described herself twice this year as dry.

If you have drawn a line like that, come and sit down out here. Nothing on either side of it is going to be taken away.

That Does Not Count As Worship

Hebrews files the ordinary favor under sacrifice

Here is the verse, and the interesting thing about it is what it sits next to.

But to do good and to communicate forget not: for with such sacrifices God is well pleased.Hebrews 13:16

With such sacrifices. Sacrifice is the temple word. It is the heaviest religious noun the writer has available, and the whole letter has been about the temple system and what has replaced it.

And the verse immediately before this one is about offering the sacrifice of praise, which is the one everybody expects. Then comes verse sixteen and he says: and also this. And this is doing good and sharing what you have.

Two sacrifices, side by side, in consecutive sentences. Praise, and then the ordinary favor. Both filed under the same enormous word.

To communicate is old English for sharing, for handing over what you have got, and it means exactly the kind of thing she has done four times this week without noticing.

So the line she has drawn does not exist in the letter. Hebrews puts the hymn in the car and the clinic run in the same category and calls both of them sacrifice, and it does not rank them.

You have been worshiping for four days without knowing it, and it was already counted while you were calling it decency. Hebrews 13:16 is where that sits, in a verse that borrows the temple's biggest word for a favor, and the same Spirit who moved the writer to put the two sacrifices in consecutive sentences is the one who lets a tired woman see her own week again.

Where the line actually came from

Let me be fair to the line, because she did not invent it and it is not stupidity.

She learned it the way almost everybody learns it: by what got named. Nobody ever stood at the front and said that a clinic run is worship. Plenty of people stood at the front and said that singing is. The categories were built by what happened to be labeled, and the labeling was not deliberate and nobody was hiding anything, and here we are.

And there is a second reason, which is more uncomfortable and more interesting. The Sunday side is countable. She can tell you how her devotional time is going. There is a measurable relationship between effort and quality on that side of the line.

The Tuesday side is not countable at all. It is unglamorous, it repeats, nobody notices, and a fifty minute phone call with a woman who has said the same four things since March produces exactly nothing you could show anybody.

Which is, and here is the part worth sitting with, an extremely accurate description of a sacrifice. That is what the word has always meant. Something real, handed over, gone, with nothing to show for it afterward.

You are already doing the harder half, and it was already the harder half while you were dismissing it. He promised it, in the description of a God who is not unrighteous to forget your work and labor of love (Hebrews 6:10), and His Spirit does not require a thing to be countable before it counts.

The paragraph that outranks the teaching

Before we go on, this outranks everything above it.

Some people must not go without food. If you live with diabetes, if you are pregnant or nursing, if you take medication, if you have ever had a hard relationship with food or with eating, if you are underweight, unwell, frail or elderly, or if you are simply not sure, speak to your doctor before you go without anything and let their answer be the answer. There is no length on this page, no kind of fast, no plan and no schedule, and there is not going to be one.

And there is a woman in your week whose wife is in the hospital, so let me say it plainly: nothing on this site connects going without food to anybody getting well. Where illness is in the picture, everybody stays with their doctors and does exactly what they say.

Privacy is about audience and never about hiding, too. Telling your doctor is right. Telling your husband is right. Telling whoever cooks in your house is right and it is basic sense. None of it fails anything.

You have been fully inside this, and you were never at the edge of it because of what anybody's body needs. Scripture settled that long before you got here (2 Corinthians 8:12), and the Spirit of God has never once been distributed on medical grounds.

If today is heavier than a page can hold, call somebody real: your doctor, a counselor, or a crisis line, and the emergency services if you or anybody near you is in danger tonight.

The breakthrough

So here is the turn, and it does not ask your body for one thing.

You are not dry, and it is already settled, and you have been offering sacrifices four days a week in a category you thought did not exist. Scripture settled that in two consecutive sentences that name two sacrifices and rank neither (Hebrews 13:16), and the Holy Spirit is not confined to the ninety minutes you were counting.

Nothing is coming off the Sunday side. The hymn in the car still gets you, and it should, and Communion is still what it is. What happens today is that the line goes, and the week you have been treating as the empty part turns out to have been full the entire time and to have been the part that cost you something.

Declare this over yourself

Say these out loud, in your own voice, wherever you are standing. The standing to speak like this is yours in Christ and it is not issued according to how your devotional time has been going. Scripture is the ground under it and the Holy Spirit is what makes it living rather than merely willing, and what God does with an ordinary week, and when, is His, however He answers.

  1. Line I drew between Sunday and the rest, you are gone and you are not God's. Hebrews names two sacrifices in two consecutive sentences and puts praise and an ordinary favor under the same word. In the name of Jesus I am erasing a line He never drew.
  2. Verdict that I am dry, you are quiet and you are not His reading of me. The unglamorous half is not countable, and that is what a sacrifice has always been, and His Spirit is settling that in me tonight. I have been full and calling it empty.
  3. Father, I have driven that girl to the clinic twice this week and never once thought of You in the car. I thank You that You filed it under Your biggest word without waiting for me to notice. Here is tomorrow's, said out loud, with my hands still going.
