Seen In SecretPsalm 139:2

You Know My Sitting Down

This message is for never once in his life having felt watched by God in a way that was good, and having no experience of being known that was not also being assessed

The first thing he can remember being told about God, at five or six, was that God sees everything you do.

It was not said cruelly. It was said by a woman who loved him and who was, in her own way, trying to give him something to hold on to, and she had been given the same sentence at the same age by somebody who also loved her.

He is fifty-four now and it has never once left, and it has never once been good news.

Being seen, in his life, has always been the same activity as being assessed. He does not have an experience of being watched that is not also being marked. Not from his father, not at school, not at work, and not from God.

So the verses everybody else finds comforting, the ones about being known, land on him as a description of a situation with no exits in it. He has read Psalm 139 many times. He can see that it is supposed to be beautiful. He has never been able to feel it as anything but a report on total coverage.

And he has never said that to anybody, because he can hear how it sounds.

If being seen has never once been good news, come and sit down. Nothing on this page is going to check anything.

You Know My Sitting Down

Look at what the man writing it does with the fact

Here is the verse, and here is the thing to notice, which is not in the verse but in what surrounds it.

Thou knowest my downsitting and mine uprising, thou understandest my thought afar off.Psalm 139:2

Read the psalm around it and watch what David does with this information.

He does not brace. He does not apologize, he does not begin an account of himself, he does not run through his week and offer explanations. There is no defensiveness anywhere in the first eighteen verses.

What he does is stay in it and keep describing it, at length, with a kind of astonishment, and then he says the thing that gives the whole psalm away: such knowledge is too wonderful for me.

Wonderful. That is the word of a man who is enjoying it.

Now, a man being inspected does not say wonderful. He says something else. He says: how much do you know, and what will you do with it, and he starts arranging his answers. David does none of that, and if this psalm were about surveillance he would have had to.

You are looking at a description of being known rather than a description of being watched, and it was already the first one. Psalm 139:2 is where that sits, in a psalm whose own author calls the knowledge wonderful, and the same Spirit who moved him to say so is the one who lets a man of fifty-four hear the difference.

Two words that have never once come apart in you

Let me put the difference plainly, because it has been fused in him since he was six and fused things need naming before they come apart.

Inspection is looking for what is wrong. Its purpose is a verdict, it is not interested in the whole of you but only in the parts that fail, and it ends with a judgment and a consequence.

Being known is looking at all of it, including the enormous amount of you that is not wrong and never was. Its purpose is not a verdict, it is company, and it does not end.

And here is what tells you which one Psalm 139 is describing. Read what it lists. My downsitting and mine uprising. Sitting down and getting up. My path and my lying down. My words before I say them, my going out, the hairs on my head.

None of those are moral. Not one item on that list is a thing a person could be judged for. It is a list of ordinary human motion, catalogued by somebody who finds it interesting, and it reads exactly like a man describing what it is to be loved by somebody who pays attention.

You have been known rather than examined, and it was already the whole of your life and not only the failures. He promised it, in the words about a Father who counts even the hairs of your head as a demonstration of value rather than of scrutiny (Matthew 10:30), and His Spirit does not attend to a man in order to build a case.

The paragraph that outranks the teaching

Before we go on, this outranks everything above it.

Some people must not go without food. If you live with diabetes, if you are pregnant or nursing, if you take medication, if you have ever had a hard relationship with food or with eating, if you are underweight, unwell, frail or elderly, or if you are simply not sure, speak to your doctor before you go without anything and let their answer be the answer. There is no length on this page, no kind of fast, no plan and no schedule, and there is not going to be one here.

And for a man who has felt assessed his whole life, let me say the other thing directly. Nothing on this site is a test. If any of this ever starts to feel like a standard you are falling short of, put it down, and the putting down is not a failure either.

Privacy is about audience and never about hiding, too. Telling your doctor is right. Telling your wife is right. Telling whoever cooks in your house is right and it is basic courtesy. None of it fails anything.

You are not being marked here, and you never have been anywhere that mattered. Scripture settled that in the sentence that says God is no respecter of persons (Romans 2:11), and the Spirit of God has never once been distributed on a score.

If today has more weight in it than a page can hold, call somebody real: your doctor, a counselor, or a crisis line, and the emergency services if you or anybody near you is in danger tonight.

The breakthrough

So here is the turn, and it costs your body nothing.

You are fully known and it is already safe, and the knowing was never assembling anything against you. Scripture settled that in a psalm whose own writer calls the knowledge wonderful (Psalm 139:2), and the Holy Spirit is not the source of a sentence said to a boy of six that has cost him forty-eight years.

The woman who said it loved you. That should stay true in this. She was handing you what she had been handed, and she meant it as an anchor, and it landed as a camera, and neither of those was anybody's fault.

What changes today is only that the sentence gets tested against the psalm itself, and the psalm has a list in it of sitting down and getting up and none of it is about what anybody did wrong.

Declare this over yourself

Say these out loud, in your own voice, wherever you are standing. The standing to speak like this is yours in Christ and it is not issued on any assessment. Scripture is the ground under it and the Holy Spirit is what makes it living rather than merely willing, and what God does in the rest of your years, and how, is His, however He answers.

  1. Eye I have always felt on me, you are not His and you never were. The psalm lists sitting down and getting up and the hairs of a man's head, and not one item on that list is a thing anybody could be judged for. In the name of Jesus I am reading it as company.
  2. Sentence said to a boy of six, you are answered and you are not God's character. The man who wrote that psalm called the knowledge wonderful, which is not a word an inspected man reaches for, and His Spirit is settling that in me tonight.
  3. Father, I have never once in fifty-four years felt watched by You in a way that was good. I thank You that You know my downsitting and my uprising and that neither of those is an accusation. Here is one ordinary thing about today, and I am not following it with anything.

Why we ask you to say these out loud
