The Hour You Emptied And Filled Back Up

This message is for skipping the meal and then spending the whole emptied hour on my phone, and feeling worse at the end of it than if I had eaten

She did the hard part. That is what makes it so annoying.

She got through the morning, she said no to the thing at eleven that she usually says yes to, and at one o'clock, when the kitchen would ordinarily have been going, she did not go in there. She actually did it. The bit that requires something of a person, she did.

And then she sat on the end of her own bed with her phone for fifty five minutes.

Not doing anything. Not even enjoying it. Scrolling the way you scroll when you are not really looking, checking something, checking it again, reading about somebody's kitchen extension, and then it was two o'clock and the hour was gone and she felt worse than if she had just had her lunch.

She has done that four times now. Four emptied hours, all filled back up with roughly nothing, and a growing private sense that she is somehow bad at a thing that has no visible skill in it.

If you have sat on the end of a bed like that, come in. This one is small and it is fixable and it is not about willpower.

Emptying is not the point, and nobody told you

Here is the whole problem in one sentence: you were told to take something out, and nobody said what to put in.

So you did the removal, faithfully, and then a vacuum did what vacuums do. There is nothing wrong with you. An hour with nothing planned in it will be filled by whatever is nearest, and what is nearest is always the phone, and that is true of everybody and it is not a character flaw.

You are not bad at this. There was never a skill in it that you failed to have. I am not being nice to you: the written word says the Lord knoweth the thoughts of man, that they are vanity (Psalm 94:11), which is God being entirely unsurprised by what a human mind does with a gap, and the Holy Spirit is what makes that land as relief rather than as a telling off.

The hour was not a test of your discipline. It was an invitation with no address on it. So let us put the address on.

What the hour is actually for

The whole thing turns on a single verse, and it is one of the warmest sentences in the psalms.

When thou saidst, Seek ye my face; my heart said unto thee, Thy face, LORD, will I seek.Psalm 27:8

Look at the order in that. God says come, and the heart answers. The whole exchange is God initiating and a person replying, which means the emptied hour was never you creating an opportunity. It was you replying to an invitation that was already out.

That changes what the hour is. It is not a gap you have to justify. It is an appointment, and He kept it before you got there.

You are not filling a space. You are keeping an appointment that He made first. The written word says we love him, because he first loved us (1 John 4:19), and first is the word doing all the work in that sentence, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes that turn an hour on the end of a bed into something with a Person in it.

Keep it the size it actually is

Now let me guard this, because a page like this can turn into a program in about four sentences and then you will fail at that instead.

You do not need an hour of prayer. You are not being handed a structure with sections in it. There is no correct way to spend it, and there is no version of this where you finish and get a mark.

Go and be in the room where the meal would have happened. Say what you have got. Sit there when you have run out. If you get four minutes in and dry up, that is fine, and the remaining fifty one minutes with God and nothing to say are not a failure, because being with somebody in silence is a thing people who know each other do.

And hear the part that matters more than any of it. Some people must not go without food, and it takes nothing away from them. If you live with diabetes, if you are pregnant or nursing, if you take medication, if you have ever had a hard relationship with food or eating, if you are unwell, underweight or frail, or if you are unsure, speak to your doctor first and let their answer stand. If the answer is no, the hour is still available to you: give God an hour that was going to be something else, because the hour was always the point and the meal was only ever how you found one. The written word says draw nigh to God, and He will draw nigh to you (James 4:8), with no clause about your health in it, and His Spirit keeps that appointment either way.

You are not one step behind anybody because of what your body will or will not allow. 2 Corinthians 8:12 settles that, where God receives according to what a person actually has, and the Holy Spirit has never once been rationed by a doctor’s advice.

If today is heavier than a page can hold, call somebody real: your doctor, a counselor, or a crisis line, and the emergency services if you or anybody near you is in danger tonight.

A picture, not an account

Picture a man whose friend moved into the same street after twenty years of letters.

For about two weeks he kept doing what he had always done. He would think of something, and write it down to tell him, and put the note in a drawer, because that was the system and the system had worked for two decades.

And then one evening he was standing at his own back door with a note in his hand and he thought: he is four houses down. And he went and knocked, and they sat in the kitchen, and he never wrote another note.

He said the odd part was not how good it was. It was how long he had gone on using the arrangement for absence after the absence had ended.

That is a picture, not an account. It is not a promise about your hour. It is here because somebody needs to see a person work out that the door is four houses away and always has been.

You are four houses away from it too, and you were the whole time you were looking further off. Acts 17:27 is where that sits, in a sentence about God not being far from any one of us, and the Holy Spirit is the one who shortens a distance that was never long.

The breakthrough

So here is the turn, and it does not need any more willpower than you already spent.

God is already in the hour, and you are not filling a gap, you are answering an invitation. The written word says draw nigh to God, and he will draw nigh to you (James 4:8), which is a sentence with movement on both ends of it, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes the room where you would have eaten a place where somebody is actually met.

Nothing about the last four attempts counts against you. The hours were not wasted, they were unaddressed, and an hour with an address on it is a different thing entirely.

Declare this over yourself

Say these out loud, standing in your own kitchen, in your own voice. The standing to speak like this is yours in Christ and it is not issued on the strength of how the last four attempts went. Scripture is the ground under it, the Holy Spirit is what makes it living rather than merely organized, and what God does in an hour given to Him is His, however He answers, and nothing on this page pretends to know.

Hour I emptied and filled straight back up, you are not lost and you are not wasted. God said seek ye my face and my heart said thy face, Lord, will I seek, so the invitation was already out before I ever moved a mealtime. In the name of Jesus I put an address on this hour and I keep it.
Belief that I am bad at a thing with no skill in it, you are not God's word about me and you are not sitting on the end of this bed any longer. He knows what a human mind does with an empty hour (Psalm 94:11) and He was not once surprised by it, and His Spirit is settling that in me while my phone is in the other room. There was never a skill, and I did not fail at it.
Father, You loved me first, and You made this appointment before I ever thought of keeping it. I thank You that You are not waiting in this kitchen with a mark scheme. I am standing where the meal would have been, and I am saying what I have got, and then I am staying here.
