The Chosen FastIsaiah 58:7

Bring The Poor That Are Cast Out To Thy House

This message is for having given money online for years without ever once having had anybody in need actually inside his own house, and suspecting that the arrangement suits him

The number is not small. That is what makes this awkward to say out loud.

He has given, steadily, for nineteen years. It goes out automatically before he sees it, which was deliberate, and it goes to good places, and he has never once regretted a payment or thought about stopping. If you told him he was ungenerous he would be genuinely puzzled and so would anybody who knows the figure.

And then there was a thing at church about Isaiah 58, and he went home and read the chapter, actually read it, sitting up in a chair, which he had not done in about a decade.

And the fourth verb stopped him.

Deal thy bread to the hungry. All right. Cover the naked. All right, in a way, at a distance, more or less. Break every yoke, which is bigger than him and he will come back to it.

Bring the poor that are cast out to thy house.

To thy house. And he sat there and did the honest arithmetic, which is that in nineteen years of steady, real, automatic, unregretted giving, not one person who needed something has sat down in his kitchen. Not one.

And underneath that, the sentence he has not said even to himself properly: the arrangement suits him.

If you have got a figure you are quietly proud of and a kitchen nobody sits in, come and sit down. Nothing here is going to ask you for a single thing.

Bring The Poor That Are Cast Out To Thy House

God describes the fast He chose and every verb is close up

Here is the passage, and I want you to notice the distance in it, because the distance is the whole thing.

Is it not to deal thy bread to the hungry, and that thou bring the poor that are cast out to thy house? when thou seest the naked, that thou cover him; and that thou hide not thyself from thine own flesh?Isaiah 58:7

Four things, and read where each of them happens.

Deal thy bread. Your bread. The loaf in your house, handed over by your hand. Not a transfer, a loaf.

Bring the poor to thy house. Inside. Through the door. Sitting on your furniture with your family present.

When thou seest the naked. Seest. You have to be close enough to see, which means close enough to be seen.

And then the last one, which is the one that gets him. Hide not thyself from thine own flesh. That is about your own relatives, and it uses the word hide, which is not a word you need unless somebody is doing exactly that.

Every one of them is close range. There is not a single distant verb in the list, and it is not because there were no distant ways to help in that century. There were. He chose these.

You are being invited into range, and it is already an invitation rather than an accusation. Isaiah 58:7 is where that sits, in four verbs that all happen within arm's length, and the same Spirit who moved the prophet to choose them is the one who lets a generous man read it without going on the defensive.

The money was never the wrong thing

Now let me be extremely careful, because there is a version of this article that would be dishonest and would also be cruel, and I am not going to write it.

Nothing here says stop. The nineteen years were real and the money was real and it did real things for real people that no amount of anybody sitting in a kitchen could have done. Some of the most important help in the world only happens at distance and through structures, and God is not against structures.

And this page is not asking you for money, will never ask you for money, and has no interest in where yours goes. Nobody here is naming a cause or an organization or this work, and if any page anywhere ever swings this passage round to point at its own bank details, close the tab.

What Isaiah is describing is a different thing from your standing payment, not a better version of it. It is presence. It is the specific, inconvenient, close-range business of a person being in your actual life, and no amount of the first thing produces the second thing, and a man can do the first for nineteen years and never once notice the second is missing.

You have not been failing at generosity, and you were never once accused of that in the chapter. He promised it in the same breath, in the pairing of the loaf and the house (Isaiah 58:7), and His Spirit is not asking you to feel bad about a payment.

The paragraph that outranks the teaching

Before anything else, this outranks everything above it.

Some people must not go without food. If you live with diabetes, if you are pregnant or nursing, if you take medication, if you have ever had a hard relationship with food or with eating, if you are underweight, unwell, frail or elderly, or if you are simply not sure, speak to your doctor before you go without anything and let their answer be the answer. There is no length on this page, no kind of fast, no plan and no schedule, and there is never going to be one here.

And notice that everything in Isaiah 58:7 can be done by a man eating three full meals today. The whole chapter's answer to a question about fasting turns out to be about a loaf and a door and a relative, and none of it requires anybody's body to do anything at all.

Privacy is about audience and never about hiding, too. Telling your doctor is right. Telling your wife is right. Telling whoever cooks in your house is right and it is basic courtesy. None of it fails anything.

You have been fully inside this, and you were never on its edge because of what your body allows. Scripture settled that long before you got here (2 Corinthians 8:12), and the Spirit of God has never once been distributed on medical grounds.

If today is heavier than a page can carry, call somebody real: your doctor, a counselor, or a crisis line, and the emergency services if you or anybody near you is in danger tonight.

The breakthrough

So here is the turn, and it costs your body nothing.

You are already the kind of man who can do this, and it is already in you, and nineteen years of steady giving is the evidence rather than the alibi. Scripture settled that in the chapter that puts the loaf and the door in the same sentence (Isaiah 58:7), and the Holy Spirit is not asking a generous man to become a different one.

And the arrangement suiting you is not a scandal, by the way. Of course it suits you. Distance is comfortable for everybody, which is exactly why God specified the range rather than the amount, and He specified it kindly, in a chapter that is answering a question about fasting from people who genuinely wanted to know.

Declare this over yourself

Say these out loud, in your own voice, wherever you are sitting. The standing to speak like this is yours in Christ and it is not issued according to the figure on any statement. Scripture is the ground under it and the Holy Spirit is what makes it living rather than merely willing, and what God does through one ordinary evening, and when, is His, however He answers.

  1. Distance I have kept, you are visible now and you are not safety. God described the fast He chose using four verbs and every single one of them happens at arm's length. In the name of Jesus I am opening the door on Thursday.
  2. Fear of being called ungenerous, you are quiet and you are not what the chapter says. Nineteen years of giving was real and is not being taken off me, and His Spirit is settling that in me tonight. Presence is a different thing, not a better version of what I did.
  3. Father, my kitchen has been empty of anybody who needed it for nineteen years and it suited me. I thank You that You specified the range rather than the amount, and that You did it kindly, in the middle of answering somebody's honest question. Here is one name, and here is Thursday.
