She has met her four times. That is the number she keeps coming back to, and it is the reason she has told nobody how she is.
Four times. Twice at the church, once at somebody's leaving thing, and once properly, in a kitchen, for about forty minutes, in March.
And then the news, and the group, and now she is in a room every Tuesday with nine other people praying for a woman she has spoken to for perhaps ninety minutes in total across her whole life.
And she cannot sleep on Tuesdays. That is the part she is not saying. She lies there afterward with it going round, and she has cried in the car twice, and last week she found she had been carrying it all day at work without noticing, in her shoulders, the way you carry a thing about your own family.
And she keeps thinking: I do not have the right. There are people in that room who have known her for twenty years. Her sister is in that room. What is a woman who has met her four times doing lying awake about this.
So she says the right amount in the meeting and nothing at all afterward, and she goes home and it goes round again.
If you are grieving something you think you have not earned, come and sit down on the step. Nobody here is checking your credentials.

The verse describes it as automatic
Here is a sentence about what happens in a body, and the useful thing is that it is not an instruction.
And whether one member suffer, all the members suffer with it; or one member be honoured, all the members rejoice with it.1 Corinthians 12:26
Read what kind of sentence that is. Paul is not saying you ought to suffer with the person who is suffering. He is not exhorting anybody. He is describing what a body does, in the present tense, as a matter of fact.
If you break a finger, your whole body knows about it within a second. The shoulder does not consider whether it has standing to be involved. The stomach does not check how well it knows the finger. The pain is systemic because the thing is one body, and the response is not chosen and not earned and could not be prevented by an act of will.
Which means the question she has been asking, which is whether she has the right to be this affected, is a question about a mechanism that does not have a permissions layer.
She is hurting because she is joined to that woman. Not because she has qualified. And the four times are not the connection. The four times are just where they happened to meet.
You are hurting because you are joined, and it was already the mechanism working rather than an overreaction. 1 Corinthians 12:26 is where that sits, in a description rather than a command, and the same Spirit who moved Paul to write it as a plain fact about bodies is the one who lets a woman stop auditing her own grief.
What the audit is costing
Now the part that matters practically, because the wondering is doing damage of its own.
Every hour she spends on the question of whether she is entitled to feel this is an hour the feeling is not doing what it is for. Grief that is allowed to be grief moves. It goes somewhere, it gets prayed, it turns into a phone call or a meal or a name said out loud at three in the morning.
Grief that is under investigation just circulates. It cannot be brought to anybody because she does not believe she has standing to bring it, and it cannot be put down because it is real, so it goes round.
And there is a second cost, quieter than the first. Somewhere in that room there is probably another person doing exactly this, and both of them are saying the right amount in the meeting and nothing afterward.
You have a grief that is permitted to be carried openly, and the permission was already there before the first Tuesday. He promised it, in the instruction to weep with those who weep, which is addressed to everybody and does not ask how long anybody has known each other (Romans 12:15), and His Spirit does not run a credentials check before He will let somebody mourn.
The paragraph that outranks the teaching
Before we go on, this outranks everything above it, and it matters more than usual here because there is somebody ill in this article.
Nothing on this site connects going without food to anybody getting well. Not once, not as a hint, not in an aside. Fasting is not a treatment, it is not a route to recovery, and it does not help an illness. That woman and her family stay with her doctors and do exactly what they say, and so do you.
And some people must not go without food at all. If you live with diabetes, if you are pregnant or nursing, if you take medication, if you have ever had a hard relationship with food or with eating, if you are underweight, unwell, frail or elderly, or if you are not sure, speak to your doctor first and let their answer be the answer. There is no length on this page, no kind of fast, no plan and no schedule.
And nothing here suggests that praying harder, or longer, or with more people, moves God's hand. There is no lever anywhere on this site and there never will be one.
You have never been handed a mechanism, and there never was one to operate. Scripture settled that where the kingdom of God is named as not a matter of eating and drinking (Romans 14:17), and the Holy Spirit is named in that same verse as what it actually consists of.
If today is heavier than a page can hold, call somebody real: your doctor, a counselor, or a crisis line, and the emergency services if you or anybody near you is in danger tonight.
So here is the turn, and it does not ask your body for anything.
You are already fully part of what is happening to that woman, and it is already true, and you were joined to her before either of you noticed. Scripture settled that in a sentence about how bodies work rather than about how people should behave (1 Corinthians 12:26), and the Holy Spirit is not the source of a question about whether you are entitled to be sad.
I am not going to tell you what happens next for her. Nobody on this page knows and nothing here would pretend to. What is being handed to you is only your own right to be in it, which you have had since March and have not been using.
Declare this over yourself
Say these out loud, in your own voice, wherever you are sitting. The standing to speak like this is yours in Christ and it is not issued according to how long anybody has known anybody. Scripture is the ground under it and the Holy Spirit is what makes it living rather than merely willing, and what God does for that woman, and when, is His, however He answers.
- Question of whether I have the right to hurt, you are closed and you are answered. Paul described a body where one part suffers and all the members suffer with it, and he wrote it as a fact rather than as an instruction. In the name of Jesus I stop auditing my own grief.
- Four times, counted over and over, you are not the measure of anything. A finger does not check how well the shoulder knows it before the whole body responds, and His Spirit is settling that in me tonight.
- Father, I have been lying awake on Tuesdays and telling nobody because I did not think I had earned it. I thank You that You set the members in the body Yourself and that the joining was never mine to arrange. Here are three sentences at the door, and I am not explaining them.
