Rewarded Openly, Whatever That Means

This message is for not knowing what the word reward means in that verse, and being quietly afraid it names something she was supposed to have received by now and has not

She has been reading that verse as an invoice for about nine years and she has only just found a word for what she has been doing.

Thy Father which seeth in secret himself shall reward thee openly.

She has done the secret part. That is not in question. There is a whole quiet architecture in her life that nobody knows about: the money that goes somewhere every month, the two people she calls, the thing she does on a Thursday that not even her husband knows the size of. Nine years of it, unannounced, exactly the way it says.

And openly is the word she keeps arriving at.

Because openly means visible. It means out where people can see it. And she looks at her life, which is fine, which is honestly fine, and she cannot find a single thing in it that she could point to and say: there. That is the open part. That is the reward arriving.

So she has begun to have a thought she does not like, and it comes at about four in the morning. Either she has done the secret part wrong, or the verse does not work, and she does not want to believe either of those.

If you have been reading a promise as an invoice, come and sit down. Nobody is going to tell you that you are ungrateful.

The passage says what the reward is, three verses earlier

Here is the verse, and then here is the thing that solves it, which is sitting in the same paragraph and gets skipped by nearly everybody.

That thine alms may be in secret: and thy Father which seeth in secret himself shall reward thee openly.Matthew 6:4

Now read the word right before shall reward thee. It is himself.

Thy Father which seeth in secret himself shall reward thee. Not: shall send you a reward. Not: shall arrange for a reward to be delivered. He Himself is the one doing it, and in the way the sentence is built, He is also very nearly the thing being given.

Read the passage on either side and it is the same all the way through. What does He contrast the hypocrites with? Not a smaller package versus a larger one. He says they have their reward about the ones who got noticed, and the thing they got was the noticing. That was it. That was the whole item, delivered in full, transaction complete.

So the two things being compared are not two sizes of prize. They are two entirely different currencies: the attention of a room, or the Father Himself paying attention to you.

You have been given the Father's own attention, and it is already the reward and not the receipt for one. Matthew 6:4 is where that sits, in the word himself, which almost nobody reads out loud, and the same Spirit who moved Matthew to keep it there is the one who takes an invoice out of a woman's hands at four in the morning.

What openly means, and what it does not

Now the second word, because it has been doing damage for nine years and it deserves to be handled properly.

Openly in that verse is not a promise of a public event in her calendar. Some of the oldest manuscripts do not even carry the word, which is a fact worth knowing and not a trick, and where it stands it carries the sense of God's own acknowledgment being real and eventual rather than of a visible payout arriving on a Thursday.

But here is the thing I want more than the textual note. Look at what happens to a life when openly gets read as an invoice.

The secret part quietly becomes a deposit. And a deposit is a completely different act from a gift, even when the hands do exactly the same thing, and she has been doing nine years of one while believing she was doing the other.

That is not greed and it is not shabby. She was handed a verse and the verse has a word in it and she read the word the way English readers read it. Anybody would.

You have not been doing it wrong, and it was never a failed transaction, because it was never a transaction. He promised it, in the covenant word to Abram where God says I am thy exceeding great reward (Genesis 15:1), and His Spirit does not deal in deliveries.

The paragraph that outranks the teaching

Before anything else, this outranks everything above it.

Some people must not go without food. If you live with diabetes, if you are pregnant or nursing, if you take medication, if you have ever had a hard relationship with food or with eating, if you are underweight, unwell, frail or elderly, or if you are simply not sure, speak to your doctor before you go without anything and let their answer be the answer. There is no length on this page, no kind of fast, no plan and no schedule, and there will not be one here.

And nothing on this page is a lever. Nothing here suggests that any of it makes God act, moves His hand, or produces an outcome for anybody, and if the invoice reading has been running for nine years then that sentence is worth reading twice.

Privacy is about audience and never about hiding, too. Telling your doctor is right. Telling your husband is right. Telling whoever cooks in your house is right and it is basic sense. None of it fails anything.

You are fully inside this, and you were never on the edge of it because of what your body allows. Scripture settled that long before you got here (2 Corinthians 8:12), and the Spirit of God has never once been distributed on medical grounds.

If today is heavier than a page can hold, call somebody real: your doctor, a counselor, or a crisis line, and the emergency services if you or anybody near you is in danger tonight.

A picture, not an account

Picture a girl who saved a letter from her father unopened for eleven years.

He wrote it when she was seventeen and going away, and he was not a man who wrote things, and she knew what it must have cost him to sit down and do it.

And she did not open it. First because she was saving it for a hard day, and then because she was saving it for a harder one, and then because it had become the thing she had rather than the thing she had read, and opening it would use it up.

He died when she was twenty-eight. And she sat with it for another four months after that, because now it was the last of him.

And when she finally opened it, on an ordinary Tuesday, for no reason at all, it was four lines long and it said nothing she did not already know. He was proud of her. He would be there. He hoped she would come home sometimes.

She said the strangest thing was not the letter. It was that she had spent eleven years protecting a thing that was only ever a man telling her he loved her, which he had also been doing out loud the whole time.

That is a picture, not an account. It is not a promise about your week or a claim about anybody's life. It is here because somebody needs to see what it costs to hold something back as an unopened prize when it was always a person speaking.

You have been holding the thing itself, and it was open, and there is nothing being saved up somewhere out of reach. It is written into Romans 8:32, where the God who did not withhold His own Son is described as freely giving, and the Holy Spirit carries that into a woman who has been waiting nine years for a delivery.

The breakthrough

So here is the turn, and it does not require your body to do anything.

You are not owed something that has failed to arrive, and it is already settled, and the verse never promised a package in the first place. Scripture settled that in one small word, himself, sitting in the middle of the sentence (Matthew 6:4), and the Holy Spirit is not the administrator of a line you have been standing in since 2016.

The quiet architecture stays. The money, the two people you call, the Thursday your husband does not know the size of. None of that was wasted and none of it is being reclassified as naive.

What comes off is nine years of four in the morning, and the specific, tiring suspicion that you had done the secret part wrong, because there was never a part to do wrong.

One thing to do with your body

Ask God plainly, out loud, for Himself rather than for anything. And then stay in the room afterwards.

Out loud, in whatever words you have. Something like: I have been waiting for a thing and I would like You instead, and I do not entirely know what I am asking for.

And then the second half, which is the whole difficulty: stay. Do not get up and go and be useful. Sit there afterwards for a while with nothing arriving, and let the nothing arriving be fine, because you have just asked for a Person and Persons are not deliveries.

That is the entire action, it takes nothing from your body, and a woman eating three meals today can do it tonight. This is yours, the whole of Him, and there is no outstanding balance anywhere. Colossians 2:9 and 10 say so, and the Holy Spirit is in the room during the part where nothing happens.

Declare this over yourself

Say these out loud, in your own voice, wherever you are sitting. The standing to speak like this is yours in Christ and it is not issued according to what has or has not arrived. Scripture is the ground under it and the Holy Spirit is what makes it living rather than merely willing, and what God does openly, and when, is His, however He answers.

Package I thought was owed to me, you are not the promise and you never were. The verse says the Father Himself rewards, and Himself is the word almost nobody reads out loud. In the name of Jesus I am putting the invoice down.
Suspicion that I did the secret part wrong, you are quiet and you are not God's word about me. It was never a transaction, so it was never a failed one, and His Spirit is settling that in me at four in the morning.
Father, I have been standing in a line since 2016 waiting for something to be visible. I thank You that You said Yourself to Abram that You are his exceeding great reward, and that You have never dealt in deliveries. Here I am asking for You, and I am staying in the room afterwards.
