Study To Be Quiet

She noticed it on a walk in February and she has been thinking about it since, on and off, in the way you think about something you are not sure counts as a problem.

She had come round the corner and the whole valley was underneath her with the light doing something, and it was genuinely beautiful, and she stood there.

And within about six seconds she had her phone out. Not to keep it. To send it. She had already selected the person before she had properly looked at the thing.

And she stopped, with the phone in her hand, and had a thought she has not been able to put down since: I do not think I know how to have an experience.

She is twenty-nine. She is not vain and she is not shallow, and anybody who reduced this to vanity would be missing it completely. It is more like a reflex about reality. A thing that happens to her alone has a provisional quality, and it does not finish becoming real until it has landed in somebody else, and she has never in her whole adult life had it any other way.

If you have had that thought on a hillside, come and sit down. Nobody here is going to take your phone off you.

The instruction is a verb about learning

Here is a phrase most people have heard and almost nobody has looked at, and the interesting word is the first one.

And that ye study to be quiet, and to do your own business, and to work with your own hands, as we commanded you.1 Thessalonians 4:11

Study to be quiet.

The word behind study means to make it your ambition, to work at it, to aim at it deliberately. It is an effortful word. In the original it has a straining quality, which is faintly comic when the thing being strained after is quietness.

Now notice what that tells you. Paul does not treat this as a natural state that everybody has and some people have lost. He treats it as a discipline you take up, in the same list as working with your hands, which is also learned, and which nobody is born knowing how to do.

Which means she has not lost a capacity. She never had it. It was never issued to anybody at birth and it is not issued now, and a woman of twenty-nine who has never had an unwitnessed life is not damaged, she is untrained.

You are looking at a skill rather than a defect, and it was already a skill in the sentence. 1 Thessalonians 4:11 is where that sits, in a verb that means to make something your ambition, and the same Spirit who moved Paul to put quietness next to manual work in one list is the one who takes the word broken off a young woman on a hillside.

The reflex is not vanity and calling it vanity will not help

Let me be exact about what is happening, because the lazy diagnosis is everywhere and it does not fit her.

Vanity would be sending the photograph to be admired. That is not what she is doing. Watch the shape of it again: she selected the person before she had looked at the valley. She was not preparing to be seen, she was reaching for a witness.

And a witness is what makes a thing count. That is not a modern invention or a phone problem, it is very deep and very old, and it is why marriages happen in front of people and why a man who wins something alone in a room will still go and find somebody.

The trouble is only this: a life in which nothing counts until it is witnessed by another person has no room in it for a life with God, because that one happens in the one place nobody else is.

And she cannot get there by deciding to want it less. She has tried that, roughly, in February. It is a skill. It gets learned the way skills get learned, in small amounts, on purpose, badly at first.

You have a Witness already present in the place you thought was empty, and He was there in February on the hillside. He promised it, in the sentence about a Father who sees in secret, where the whole point is that the secret place already has somebody in it (Matthew 6:6), and His Spirit is not an absence you are being asked to tolerate.

The paragraph that outranks the teaching

Before anything else, this outranks everything above it.

Some people must not go without food. If you live with diabetes, if you are pregnant or nursing, if you take medication, if you have ever had a hard relationship with food or with eating, if you are underweight, unwell, frail or elderly, or if you are simply not sure, speak to your doctor before you go without anything and let their answer be the answer. There is no length on this page, no kind of fast, no plan and no schedule, and there is not going to be one here.

And the quiet this article is describing is about audience and never about concealment, which matters enormously for somebody your age. Telling your doctor is always right. Telling your partner or your parents is right. Telling whoever cooks in your house is right and it is basic courtesy. None of that is a failure of anything, and secrecy for its own sake is not the goal here and never has been.

You are free to tell the people who look after you, and it is already allowed, and it costs nothing on this page. It is written into the same chapter of Matthew, where the whole weight falls on a Father who sees rather than on anything being hidden (Matthew 6:6), and the Holy Spirit is not asking a young woman to become secretive.
