He has been on the outside of a certain kind of selection for as long as he can remember, and he has stopped being angry about it, which he is not sure is progress.
It started in the ordinary way. Teams at school. Then the parts in things, then the groups, then the promotion at twenty-nine that went to a man who was worse at the work and better in a room. He is not bitter about that particular one. It was a long time ago and the man has been decent to him since.
What accumulates is not the individual instances. It is the pattern, and the pattern has been remarkably consistent for forty years, and at some point a person stops treating it as a series of events and starts treating it as information about themselves.
And here is the thing he has never said out loud, and would find it hard to say without his voice doing something.
He assumes God works the same way.
Not consciously. He would deny it if you asked him directly and he would mean the denial. But underneath, in the part that does not consult him, he has quietly filed himself as the sort of thing that gets passed over, and he expects that to hold at the last as well as it has held everywhere else.

Even the prophet got it wrong first
Here is the scene, and the detail I want is that the man making the mistake in it is a prophet.
Samuel is sent to a house to anoint a king. He is not a novice, he is the most senior spiritual figure in the country, and he has been hearing from God accurately since he was a boy.
And the eldest son walks in, and Samuel looks at him and thinks: that is obviously the one.
But the LORD said unto Samuel, Look not on his countenance, or on the height of his stature, because I have refused him: for the LORD seeth not as man seeth; for man looketh on the outward appearance, but the LORD looketh on the heart.1 Samuel 16:7
Read who has to be corrected. Not a crowd. Not a careless man. Samuel, on the job, mid-assignment, doing the thing he was sent to do.
That is not an incidental detail, it is the point of putting the story in the book. Sorting by what shows is not a flaw in shallow people. It is the default setting of human sight, and it runs in the best man available, at the top of his profession, in the middle of a task God gave him.
Which means the forty years of being sorted are not evidence about him. They are evidence about how sight works.
You have been assessed by a faculty God had to correct in a prophet, and it was never the instrument He uses. 1 Samuel 16:7 is where that sits, in a rebuke aimed at the most spiritually attentive man in the country, and the same Spirit who moved the writer to preserve Samuel's mistake rather than tidy it away is the one who lets a passed-over man see what that means about him.
What He says He is looking at
Now the second half of the sentence, and it is worth going slowly because it is easy to hear it as a consolation prize.
The LORD looketh on the heart.
That is not: God also considers your inner qualities, as a secondary factor, after the more obvious things. It is a statement about what He actually looks at. His attention goes to the place where the real person is, and it goes there first, and it goes there because that is what He is interested in.
And notice what happens next in the chapter. God does not merely tolerate the son nobody called in from the field. He chooses him. The one who was not brought to the table, whose own father did not think to include him in the line-up, is the one the whole thing was about.
That is a scene where the sorting was run twice, once by everybody in the room and once by God, and the two produced opposite results.
You have been looked at by the only sight that matters, and it has already reached the place where you actually are. He promised it, in the words about a God who does not judge after the sight of the eyes (Isaiah 11:3), and His Spirit has never once evaluated a man on how he goes in a room.
The paragraph that outranks the teaching
Before we go on, this outranks everything above it.
Some people must not go without food. If you live with diabetes, if you are pregnant or nursing, if you take medication, if you have ever had a hard relationship with food or with eating, if you are underweight, unwell, frail or elderly, or if you are simply not sure, speak to your doctor before you go without anything and let their answer be the answer. There is no length on this page, no kind of fast, no plan and no schedule, and there is not going to be one here.
And for a man who has been ranked his whole life, this needs saying plainly: nothing on this site ranks anybody. There is no version of this where somebody who does it is further along than somebody who does not, and the reader who cannot do any of it is not being handed a smaller portion.
Privacy is about audience and never about hiding, too. Telling your doctor is right. Telling your wife is right. Telling whoever cooks in your house is right and it is basic courtesy. None of it fails anything.
You have never been placed anywhere in an order, and you never have been in His sight. Scripture settled that in the sentence that names God as no respecter of persons (Romans 2:11), and the Spirit of God has never once been distributed according to standing.
If today has more weight in it than a page can hold, call somebody real: your doctor, a counselor, or a crisis line, and the emergency services if you or anybody near you is in danger tonight.
So here is the turn, and it does not require your body to do a thing.
You are looked at rather than looked over, and it is already how He works, and it was never going to change at the last. Scripture settled that in a sentence God spoke to correct a prophet mid-assignment (1 Samuel 16:7), and the Holy Spirit is not running the process that has been running on you since school.
The forty years happened. I am not going to reframe them as a gift or tell you the promotion at twenty-nine was secretly for the best. It cost you things, and some of those things do not come back.
What comes off tonight is only the conclusion you drew from it, which was never about God at all, and which was built out of a faculty that God Himself had to stop a prophet from using.
Declare this over yourself
Say these out loud, in your own voice, wherever you are standing. The standing to speak like this is yours in Christ and it is not issued by anybody's selection. Scripture is the ground under it and the Holy Spirit is what makes it living rather than merely willing, and what God does with the rest of it, and when, is His, however He answers.
- Sorting I have been put through since school, you are not God's method. He stopped a prophet mid-assignment for using it, and He said plainly that man looks on the outward and He does not. In the name of Jesus I stop reading forty years as a verdict.
- Conclusion I drew about being passed over at the last, you are quiet and you are not from Him. He chose the son nobody thought to call in from the field, and He did it in front of everybody who had already sorted the room, and His Spirit is settling that in me tonight.
- Father, I have never said out loud that I expect You to do what every other room has done. I thank You that You look at the heart first and that Your sight has never once needed correcting. Here is the part of me nobody ever picked, and I am describing it without the joke on the end.
